Calgary GP to Business Central Migration

An honest look at where GP stands

We have implemented and supported Dynamics GP for more than 25 years, and we continue to support it every day. This is not a sales pitch. GP remains a stable and capable system. However, Microsoft has made its long-term direction clear, with new innovation focused on Business Central. At the same time, the pool of experienced GP consultants, developers, and administrators continues to shrink. The organizations managing this transition most successfully are the ones that choose their own timeline, rather than having it forced on them by a server failure, aging infrastructure, or the departure of a key GP resource.

What actually moves across

Master records, including customers, vendors, items, and the chart of accounts, are migrated and cleaned as part of the process. Open transactions and balances come across as well, so you begin in Business Central fully reconciled. Historical data is a decision we make together. Most clients choose to migrate two to five years of history and retain GP as a read-only archive for older records. Bringing every transaction forward from 2003 is certainly possible, but it often means paying to migrate data that will rarely, if ever, be accessed again.

What does not translate one to one

Your GP customizations and third-party products come under the same review. Some have direct Business Central equivalents, some are now standard functionality, and some turn out to be features nobody has used in years. During discovery, we inventory every customization, integration, and add-on and provide an honest recommendation on what should be replaced, rebuilt, retired, or left behind. Clients are often surprised to learn how much of their existing GP environment was added to fill gaps that Business Central already addresses out of the box.

How your team lands

GP users typically find their footing in Business Central quickly, often within a few weeks. Many of the core accounting concepts remain familiar: batches, posting processes, and financial controls all carry over. The biggest adjustment is the modern web interface, along with tight integration to Microsoft 365 tools such as Excel, which finance teams usually embrace immediately. Training happens throughout the project rather than all at once at the end, so go-live feels more like a normal Monday morning than a leap into the unknown.

Choosing your timing

A typical GP to Business Central migration runs 14 to 18 weeks, depending on complexity, data volume, and integrations. The best approach is usually to schedule the project during your slower season and target a go-live immediately following a clean month-end close. That gives the finance team a clear cutover point and keeps reconciliation straightforward. Throughout the project, we continue supporting and maintaining your GP environment right up to the transition. Few partners today have deep hands-on experience with both platforms, and that ability to work confidently in GP while preparing for Business Central helps reduce risk and keep the migration on your timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Microsoft has announced the end of the road for GP, with support winding down over the coming years. There is time to plan, and planning beats reacting.

We inventory every customization and add-on, then sort them into three categories: now standard in Business Central, needs a modern equivalent, or quietly unused. The third category is usually larger than anyone expects.
